Infused water

Lemon cucumber water

Sold as a cleanse. Actually just a very good reason to keep pouring.

A jug of water with thin lemon and cucumber slices floating in it, on a light surface.

Search for this and you will be told it flushes toxins, resets your metabolism and shrinks your waist. None of that is true. Your liver and kidneys handle the toxin question full-time and do not need a jug of water with fruit in it to help.

What it genuinely does: makes water taste of something, so you finish the jug instead of letting it go warm next to your keyboard. That is a real benefit and it needs no cleanse story attached.

The lemon adds sharpness, the cucumber adds a soft green background note, and together they taste like more than either does alone.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Slice thinly

Slice the lemon and cucumber as thinly as you can. Thin slices have more surface area and give up their flavour in a couple of hours instead of overnight.

  2. Combine

Put both in a jug and top with cold water.

  3. Chill

Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Four is better.

  4. Pull the lemon out

Take the lemon slices out after about 4 hours. The pith keeps leaching after the juice has stopped, and it turns the whole jug bitter by the next morning. The cucumber can stay until the end of the day.

Worth knowing

What it actually does for you

Calories

Effectively water. There is no detoxing happening, no metabolism boost, and no meaningful vitamin C — most of the lemon stays in the lemon. Its entire value is that you drink more of it than you would drink of plain water, which for most desk workers is the only variable that actually needs fixing.

How this was worked out: A whole lemon holds roughly 30 kcal and 140 mg potassium; 150 g of cucumber holds about 22 kcal and 220 mg potassium (USDA FoodData Central). Only a small, unmeasured fraction crosses into the water in a few hours, so no mineral figure is claimed. The 6 kcal per glass is an approximation of the sugar that does leach out.

Questions

Does lemon water detox your body?

No. "Detox" is a marketing word, not a physiological process you can help along with a drink. Your liver and kidneys clear metabolic waste continuously, and they do it whether or not there is lemon in your glass. Lemon water is pleasant, hydrating and harmless — those are the honest claims.

Why does my lemon water taste bitter?

The pith. The white layer under the peel keeps releasing bitter compounds long after the juice has finished, so a jug left overnight with lemon slices in it turns sharp and unpleasant. Take the slices out after about four hours and the problem disappears.

Is lemon water bad for your teeth?

Sliced lemon in a big jug of water is heavily diluted, so it is far gentler than neat lemon juice. If you drink it all day and you are worried, use a straw and rinse with plain water afterwards. Do not brush immediately after — enamel is briefly softened by acid.
