☀️ Europe's hottest summer on record

The goose that honks until you drink water

Honk sits in your Mac's menu bar and uses your webcam to notice when you drink. Go too long without water and it nudges you. By default that's a quiet banner. Turn the dial up and it's a goose that won't shut up until you take a sip.

Most desk workers are mildly dehydrated by lunchtime

You sit down, you focus, and three hours go by before you reach for a glass. That low-level dehydration is enough to give you a headache and kill your focus by mid-afternoon. The WHO says most adults need about 2–3 litres of fluid a day, more when it's hot, and that you should sip steadily instead of waiting to feel thirsty. In the2026 European heatwave, that stopped being optional.

A phone reminder is easy to swipe away and forget. Honk pays attention to whether youactually drank, not whether you saw a notification, and it gets as loud as you let it.

Set your own honk

One slider. Keep it polite for the office, or crank it up when you want the goose to actually get your attention. Try it:

😌
GentleDefault

A quiet banner when you've gone too long without water. No sound, so it's fine in the office or on a call. This is what you get out of the box.

GentleHonkNagUnhinged

🛡️ Even on Unhinged there's a one-click "I'll drink later", and Honk quietly drops to silent during calls and screen-shares. It won't lock you out of something you actually need to do.

How Honk works

It sees your sips

The webcam catches the hand-to-mouth motion of a sip, all worked out on your Mac. It isn't counting glasses or guessing at a schedule. It responds when you actually drink.

It honks, your way

Set it anywhere from a silent banner to a full-screen goose you clear by drinking. You decide how much it's allowed to bug you.

It tracks your day

Set a daily goal and watch your streak build up. The more you drink, the calmer the goose gets.

It shares the camera

macOS lets apps share the webcam, so Honk runs quietly next to Zoom, Meet, or FaceTime. It only checks a few frames a second, so your battery barely notices.

Your webcam stays yours

Everything Honk does happens on your own Mac. It reads a handful of motion points to tell when you're drinking, then forgets them a moment later. No frames saved, no uploads. It works with the Wi-Fi off.

FAQ

How does Honk detect that I'm drinking?

It watches for the hand-to-mouth motion of a sip using your Mac's webcam and Apple's on-device Vision framework. Everything runs locally on your machine. It doesn't save images or send anything over the internet, and it works with the Wi-Fi off.

Will Honk embarrass me in the office or on a call?

No. Out of the box it's just a silent banner. The louder modes are opt-in, and even then Honk drops back to silent on its own during fullscreen calls and screen-sharing, unless you tell it not to.

What is honk-to-unlock mode?

It's the loudest setting, and it's opt-in. When you've gone too long without water, a full-screen goose takes over and only leaves once the webcam sees you drink. There's always a visible bypass, so you can't get locked out of something urgent.

Can Honk run while I’m on a video call?

Yes. macOS lets more than one app use the camera at once, so Honk sits quietly in the background during Zoom, Meet, or FaceTime. It only checks a few frames a second, so it barely touches your battery.

Is my webcam data private?

Yes. Everything happens on your Mac. Honk reads a handful of motion points from the camera to tell when you're drinking, then throws them away. It never saves a frame, never uploads anything, and works fine with the internet off.

How much water should I drink at my desk?

The World Health Organization puts it at roughly 2 to 3 litres a day for most adults, and more when it's hot. The trick is to sip through the day instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. That's the part Honk actually helps with.

Does Honk work on a Mac mini without a camera?

Yes. Plug in a USB webcam, or use your iPhone as a Continuity Camera, and Honk picks up whatever camera is connected.

Is Honk a subscription?

No. You pay once and it's yours, with a year of updates included.

I built Honk during the 2026 heatwave, after realising I'd gone a whole workday on one coffee and not much else. I can ignore a reminder. I can't ignore a goose.
